ST. PETERSBURG

St Petersburg is a beautiful city to visit for an unforgettable experience: high art, extravagant architecture, vibrant nightlife, an extraordinary history and rich cultural traditions that have inspired and nurtured some of the modern world’s most significant literature, music, and visual art. From the White Nights Festival to world-beating opera and ballet productions, St. Petersburg charms and entices in every season, and a stay with Defoes Lifestyle will ensure that you enjoy the best of the city.

The creation of westward-looking Peter the Great, the conception of St Petersburg, was intended to display imperial Russia’s growing status in the world. The sheer magnificence and history of Russia’s imperial capital do not fail to amaze; however, this is also a city with a revolutionary spirit.

Whether cruising along intertwined elegant canals on a Defoes Lifestyle charter, crossing one of 342 bridges, or watching the bridges’ raising over the mighty Neva River, allowing ships to pass through, you are always close to the water in this city. The city draws many parallels to Venice. Walking around the historic centre reveals canals lined by Italianate mansions and broken up by striking plazas adorned with baroque and neoclassical palaces. North of the city centre, pristine beaches fringe the Gulf of Finland, offering a chance for you to spend some time relaxing.

Things To Do

The State Hermitage Museum

The impressive State Hermitage Museum is one of the worlds largest artistic and cultural museums, displaying three million works of art and artefacts. Founded by Empress Catherine the Great in 1764, the museum initially served as a private gallery before opening to the public in 1852.

Grand Palace

The majestic Grand Palace is the centrepiece of The Peterhof Palace, a series of palaces and gardens located in Petergof and known as the Russian Versailles. Versailles was the inspiration for Peter the Great to commission an imperial palace, and the Baroque Grand Palace was built between 1714–28.
