THE TREVI FOUNTAIN

The Trevi Fountain is one of the world’s most beautiful fountains, and a fountain has been present on the site since 19 BC. Giuseppe Pannini and several others completed the current incarnation, designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi. It is the largest Baroque fountain in the city, 26.3 metres high and 49.15 metres wide. Since 1954 there has been a tradition of throwing coins into the fountain after a film established a modern myth. If you throw in one coin, you will return to Rome. If you throw in two coins, you will fall in love with an attractive Italian, and three coins mean that you will marry the person you met.

THE SISTINE CHAPPEL

The Sistine Chapel, famous for its frescoes, depicting biblical narratives by Michelangelo and other Renaissance masters, was originally known as the Cappella Magna. It is inside the Apostolic Palace, the pope’s official residence in Vatican City. The chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who restored it between 1477 and 1480. Principal papal ceremonies take place within the chapel, along with the election of a new pope, by the Sacred College of Cardinals.
